Infection Prevention and Control: Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection!

This session is designed for facility-based environmental cleaning and housekeeping staff, along with their leadership, to emphasize their essential role in maintaining a clean, safe healthcare environment. Environmental cleaning and disinfection are key strategies in infection prevention and control.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) continue to impact millions globally. Contaminated high-touch surfaces in healthcare settings can contribute to HAI transmission. This interactive session will review CDC guidelines on environmental cleaning and disinfection, including air, water, and surface-related infection risks. We’ll also cover how to choose and properly use cleaning supplies and equipment in resident care areas.

Attendees will learn how to develop cleaning policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), checklists, and other tools for implementing an effective environmental cleaning program that aligns with best practices.

Key Learning Takeaways:

  • Understand CDC and Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) guidelines for environmental cleaning
  • Explore tools and strategies to build a strong cleaning program (including locating contact time on cleaning products)
  • Recognize the importance of staff training, accountability, and clear responsibilities
  • Learn how to implement structured monitoring to ensure compliance with manufacturers’ guidelines
